The West Bengal Government is setting up
a world class Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical
Investment Region (PCPIR) in the Haldia Region in its
endeavor to promote industrialization in the state. WBPCPIR
has a total contiguous land area of approximately 250 sq
km, consisting of Haldia mainland (200 sq km) and adjacent
Nayachar Island (50 sq km).

The proposed petrochemical
complex at Nayachar can be best described as the island
segment of the WBPCPIR, its mainland segment being Haldia.

The WBPCPIR is expected to attract domestic and foreign
investments leading to improved socio-economic conditions of
the region, including the up-coming of schools, research and
training institutions, community health centre, community
zones, and creating large employment opportunities to the
tune of 10 lakh jobs.

Today, Haldia is the largest
petroleum, chemicals and petrochemicals industrial area in
India with well developed industrial and social
infrastructure.
